Agriculture Minister Rainer Vows to Reduce Red tape and Enhance "Value" in Agro-industry
In a rousing speech to the Bundestag, Alois Rainer, the newly appointed Agriculture Minister and member of the Christian Social Union (CSU), declared a significant shift in agricultural policy. Rainer promised to reduce bureaucracy and elevate the status of farmers through measures that promote "social appreciation."
The focal point of Rainer's program revolves around the reinstatement of the agricultural diesel refund, which he believes will bring immediate relief to businesses grappling with the aftermath of the budget crisis. In late 2023, this subsidy was cut by the traffic light government, a decision largely influenced by the drawn-out protests from German farmers.
Rainer laid emphasis on the idea that farmers need "freedom, not forms." In a bid to reduce bureaucracy, he encouraged his department to critically evaluate existing measures and submit innovative reform proposals. Rainer aims to provide "noticeable relief" to farmers by easing reporting and documentation requirements.
The coalition government champions a free market economy and trust, promoting "informed citizens" who make decisions based on an understanding of their impact on health and sustainability. Rainer emphasized that this includes food choices, from fruits and vegetables to fish and meat.
On the matter of animal welfare, Rainer reiterated the importance of animal husbandry in Germany, stating that moving production overseas would not serve animal welfare or quality. He expressed support for maintaining high-quality standards in German animal husbandry for the future.
Greenpeace, an environmental organization, demands stricter legislation to protect animals. They called out Rainer in a morning demonstration, presenting photos of sick and injured pigs from several farms in North Rhine-Westphalia, Schleswig-Holstein, and Lower Saxony, where conditions fall short of the legally mandated minimum standards.
Greenpeace has called for a significant reduction in animal and meat consumption in Germany, aiming for a 50% decrease by 2035. They believe this decrease could help protect the environment, climate, and animals, aiding Germany's commitment to agricultural climate protection.
