Ditching Cash? Potential Impact on Consumers as Collaboration with Shell Wanes
- ⏱️ ~1 Min Read
Cash Discontinuation: No More Withdrawals From June Onwards. - Adjustments in cash withdrawal procedures: no longer permissible to withdraw cash as previously.
Cash, once a dominant form of currency, is now commonly used only as change. According to the "Cologne City Newspaper" (KSTA), your next visit to a Shell gas station might mark the last time you can withdraw cash. By the end of June, the Cash Group (comprising Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, and Postbank) is reportedly set to discontinue the cash withdrawal service at Shell stations.
The 1000-Euro Cash Limit Without a Minimum Turnover
Up until now, customers could withdraw up to €1000 without any minimum turnover, albeit with the usual ATM fee if their bank wasn't part of the Cash Group. As reported by the "KSTA", around 1300 gas stations will no longer provide this service. It's still hazy if there'll be a future partnership with other banks for similar services.
Cash withdrawal could become challenging for Cash Group customers, as some partner banks like Deutsche Bank and Postbank plan to shutter almost half their branches by the end of 2026.
There Goes Another ATM, CASH FALLS
The number of ATMs has dropped significantly. In 2018, there were approximately 59,000 nationwide, but by 2023, that number decreased to 51,000, and the decline persists. Increased digital payments and the frequent occurrence of ATM explosions appear to be reasons for the decrease.

What happens to cash availability when a cash withdrawal service like Cash Group ends at gas stations?
When a service like Cash Group's cash withdrawal service ceases to be available at gas stations, it may have various implications:
- Scarcity of Cash Withdrawal Points: Customers could face a decrease in cash withdrawal options, potentially reducing the overall cash availability for immediate use.
- Longer Queues: Fewer locations offering cash withdrawal services could result in longer lines at the remaining ATMs.
- Heightened Fees: Consumers might have to pay higher fees for using ATMs outside their bank's network due to the reduced availability of cash withdrawal points.
- Shift to Digital Payments: This could speed up the transition to digital payment methods, potentially decreasing the need for physical cash in transactions.
In-depth insights, specific data or studies regarding the Cash Group's service discontinuation would be necessary for detailed findings.

As a result of the Cash Group's discontinuation of cash withdrawal services at gas stations such as Shell, consumers might face a decrease in cash availability, leading to longer queues and potentially higher fees for using ATMs outside their bank's network. This could also accelerate the shift towards digital payment methods, particularly in the finance, banking-and-insurance, and industry sectors, where institutions like Deutsche Bank, Postbank, and Commerzbank play significant roles as community institutions.
