ABG Partners with BBC to Revive DC Shoes as Skate Market Booms

Authentic Brands Group (ABG) has partnered with BBC International to breathe new life into DC Shoes. The deal, announced on Thursday, sees BBC take over global design, wholesale distribution, and sourcing for DC's footwear and snowboard boots in the U.S. and Canada. This comes as the skate and skate-inspired shoe market surges in popularity, with a 21% sales drop at rival Vans sparking a turnaround plan.

DC Shoes, known for its skateboard heritage, is part of the Boardriders portfolio, which includes Quiksilver, Billabong, and Roxy. With annual revenues of approximately $2.9 billion, the portfolio is a significant player in the action sports market. ABG, which acquired Boardriders in September, has also partnered with Liberated Brands for U.S. and Canada retail and e-commerce operations for the entire Boardriders portfolio.

BBC International, a licensing specialist, has worked with brands like Polo Ralph Lauren, Champion, and Michael Kors. The company aims to expand DC Shoes' global footprint, introduce new innovations, and maintain its skate culture heritage. Meanwhile, Centric Brands handles kids' apparel for Quiksilver, Billabong, and Roxy in the U.S. and Canada. Next, a retail group, acquired the intellectual property rights for Vince and Hunter Boots in 2023.

The ABG-BBC partnership signals a renewed focus on DC Shoes, with BBC's expertise in global licensing set to boost the brand's reach and appeal. As skate and skate-inspired shoes remain highly sought after, the collaboration could prove timely and profitable for both parties.
