Aachen Customs Crack Down on Heating Oil Tax Evasion
Customs officers in Aachen are cracking down on a tax evasion scheme involving heating oil. They've discovered vehicles using heating oil instead of diesel to avoid fuel tax.
Heating oil, marked with a red dye, is easily distinguishable from diesel. However, a vehicle owner attempted to conceal it by painting the diesel filter. This illegal practice, known as 'heating oil dieselization', can cause engine damage and increase emissions. It also provides an unfair advantage to some transport companies.
The Main Customs Office Aachen has found this issue frequently. During checks, officers take fuel samples and charge tax for the entire tank capacity if heating oil is detected. Tax evasion can result in a prison sentence of up to five years or a substantial fine.
Customs officers in Aachen are urging drivers to comply with fuel tax laws. They warn that using heating oil in diesel vehicles is illegal and can lead to severe penalties and engine damage.
